To Superintendent.
1.
With reference to the attached papers, I beg to
report that the practice of payments of money to informere obtaining in this country as far as the Metropolitan Police are concerned ie as follows:-
When an informer gives information to a Police Officer which proves to be of value, the officer would report the facts for the information of the Commissioner, who, if he considers it deserving, authorises the paymerx of a monetary reward to the informer,
In every case the informer is required to sign
a form acknowledging receipt, but he may give a name oth,
than his own in order to conceal his identity.
It is not the practice here to ask a subordinate officer who his informant is, but in most cases the officer would impart the information to hie Divisional Detective Inspector or other superior officer, who usually pays the reward to the informer, or failing this deputee the rubordinate officer concerned to do so, a practice which gives general satisfaction.
The Cormissioner also authorises members of the Metropolitan Police to receive rewards from other persona. for any assistance rendered should the facts of the case, as presented to him, be considered worthy of same.
